Sessions 1 and 2 - Egypt and Scotland

Welcome to the Kennerly Passport to Reading Club!  First, I want to tell you all how wonderful your children were for me last night.  I know two hours was a long time, but they all stayed with me, listened, and worked well with each other.  I can honestly say that they were the best behaved reading club I have ever had.  You should all be proud of them.

To begin our adventure, everyone received their passports that we will stamp each week as we travel.  I collect them at the end of each session, and on the last night, they will be able to take them home.  Today their passports were stamped with two countries: Egypt and Scotland.

In Egypt, we learned about the pyramids, mummies, and pharaohs.  We talked about the climate in Egypt and why the Nile River is so important to them.  We looked at books and pictures that showed the inside chambers of pyramids.  We also looked at Egyptian hieroglyphics and tried to decided if we could read any of it.  For our art project, we made a Pharaoh headdress and had our pictures taken in front of a camel or a mummy cutout.

Then we traveled to Scotland.  We talked about Scottish dress (kilts) and bagpipes.  We read about the Lockness monster, who is nicknamed Nessie, and tried to decided if we thought she was real or not. We looked at pictures of the beautiful countryside and listened to bagpipe music as we did our craft.  For our art project, we colored Nessie and placed her in a lake.

Our next Passport to Reading session will not be until January 9, the week we return from winter break.  So, have a peaceful holiday season.  See you all next year. Enjoy the pictures!
